Active Living Partner Story:

Promoting the Goodhue Pioneer State Trail.

In 2016, residents and visitors to the Goodhue Pioneer State Trail in Zumbrota, MN have an even greater opportunity for recreation, physical activity and overall healthy living.

This is because a new trailhead facility with a drinking fountain and bathrooms has been built on parkland recently purchased by the City for this purpose. Trail users are able to seek shelter from the sun, wind or rain; fill up their water bottle and enjoy the miles of trail from Zumbrota to neighboring cities.

Live Well Goodhue County generously donated money for additional features at the trailhead including several bicycle racks installed at the trailhead and downtown Zumbrota, and a bicycle Fix-It Station added to the trailhead building. The Station provides bicyclists with the ability to make necessary minor repairs and maintenance on their bikes without the need for a cumbersome tool box.

The ultimate goal of the State Trail is to connect Zumbrota with the neighboring communities of Goodhue and Red Wing to the northeast and Pine Island to the south. This will effectively connect trail users with the Cannon Valley Trail in Red Wing and Douglas Trail in Pine Island. Ultimately the completed State Trail will connect the communities of Zumbrota, Goodhue, Red Wing, Cannon Falls, Northfield, Pine Island and Rochester.

Design and planning for the State Trail has been ongoing since its inception in 1994, and every year it comes closer to fruition.

“Every day we see people using the trail, walking, biking, jogging, pushing strollers," says trail advocate Roxanne Bartsh.

There's also horseback riders, snowmobilers and cross country skiers sharing the trail.

Thanks to the support of various state agencies and volunteers, the use of the State Trail grows every year. The addition of the trailhead and amenities will significantly increase the trail's use for area residents as well as visitors to the region.
